Spam, Scams & Phishing

Viruses are the number one evil of the internet, Spyware pulls in at a close second, Spam and Phishing email pull up at number 3 on the top 10 list of internet evil.

Spam, other that something you might have eaten as a child is email that you get that you didn't ask for, didn't want and don't know the person or people it came from.

Spam generally is un requested email advertising - at best.  At worst it is un requested email advertising for products that you have no use for.  At the bottom of the barrel, it is advertising for x rated products and the titles make you blush like a school girl.

Scams are worse than any spam because it preys on the naive and inexperienced offering that you've won a lottery you didn't buy a ticket for or that you've lucked out because of all the billions of people with an email address, yours has been chosen by some poor Joe who is dying to give all his money to you.

Phishing is email designed to look like an authority, like your bank or paypal, requesting personal information that your bank might need - problem is... it's not your bank, it's some lowlife that needs to get a life, trying to trick you into handing over all they need to pretend to be you.... with your money, and your credit!

In the mean time, be cautious.  Your bank won't send you an email to ask for your SSN or SIN number and paypal wont send you an email asking you for your credit card number, you didn't win the Nigerian Lottery or the UK lottery and there is no one who randomly picked you to handle their estate of millions.
