Wizard of Oz Munchkin Suicide Urban Legend

Apparently it's been going around for years - some commotion in the background of a scene from The Wizard of Oz was supposedly a "munchkin" committing suicide right thee on the set. The "munchkin" supposedly decided to end it all when his affections for a female "munchkin" were not returned.

 

The story got some new life when the movie was re-released.

As it turns out, the commotion in question turned out to be a large bird spreading it's wings.

The facts are that the munchkin scenes were not filmed until after the trip to the emerald city so there wouldn't be any little people on the set at the point this scene was filmed.

Even if there were, it seems a tad unrealistic to believe that this would have made it into the final cut - and definitely would have been taken out on the re-release don't you think?
